The occupations of London: the Jacobites, the Williamites, and the Glorious Revolution

Lead Research Organisation: University College London
Department Name: History

Abstract

I propose a systematic comparison of two occupations of London in the period 1685-1689, the Jacobite occupation and the later Dutch occupation, and the 'Glorious Revolution'. This moment in British history remains a touchstone for studies of revolution in political science, sociology, and economics. My research will examine why the Jacobite occupation failed and the Dutch one succeeded, referencing the creation of xenophobic narratives targeting the Irish Catholics and Dutch Protestants, showing how racism and religious bigotry affects wider politics. My research will empirically challenge scholarship that takes for granted a peaceful process of British constitutional development.
