SMARTAWOOD SITE HOARDING FROM CONSTRUCTION PLASTICS WASTE

Lead Participant: PLASTECOWOOD LIMITED

Abstract

Plastecowood is the manufacturer of Smartawood(tm), a carbon negative construction lumber material that does not rot, split or splinter and requires little to no maintenance. It's made from 100% recycled household mixed plastic packaging waste, and is used to make outdoor benches, decking, playground fences, boardwalks and storage stillages purchased by estates professionals.

We have developed a concept for a construction site hoarding product, and have completed desktop research for feasible supplies of suitable construction plastics waste that could be recycled to make the first carbon negative construction hoarding.

Our SMARTAWOOD(tm) HOARDING will have repeat measurable value for hundreds of construction projects over its envisaged 30 year lifespan (due to construction wear and tear) it can be recycled at end of life to make new products and offer indirect value in the positive messaging about the circular economy potential for construction as a whole.

We will collaborate with the University of Surrey Department of Engineering who will engage academic and industry stakeholders to explore this concept with us, and who will carry out technical studies on both our recycled manufactured material, and then on its assembly as a new product.

Our aim by project close December 2023 is to have developed a successful prototype which will render sufficient interest from the market to attract pilot project contracts, refine the whole system design and to then commercialise the first certified carbon negative construction hoarding available on the market by late 2024\.
