Abstract
Historically, the discovery, development and application of metals have set the pace for the evolution of human civilisation, driven the way that people live, and shaped our modern societies. Today, metals are the backbone of the global manufacturing industry and the fuel for economic growth. In the UK, the metals industry comprises 11,100 companies, employs 230,000 people, directly contributes £10.7bn to the UK GDP, and indirectly supports a further 750,000 employees and underpins some £200bn of UK GDP. As a foundation industry, it underpins the competitive position of every industrial sector, including aerospace, automotive, construction, electronics, defence and general engineering. However, extraction and processing of metals are very energy intensive and cause severe environmental damage: the extraction of seven major metals (Fe, Al, Cu, Pb, Mn, Ni and Zn) accounts for 15% of the global primary energy demand and 12% of the global GHG emission. In addition, metals can in theory be recycled infinitely without degradation, saving enormous amounts of energy and CO2 emission. For instance, compared with the extraction route, recycling of steel saves 85% of energy, 86% GHG emission, 40% water consumption and 76% water pollution. Moreover, metals are closely associated with resource scarcity and supply security, and this is particularly true for the UK, which relies almost 100% on the import of metals.
The grand challenge facing the entire world is decoupling economic growth from environmental damage, in which metals have a critical role to play. Our vision is full metal circulation, in which the global demand for metallic materials will be met by the circulation of secondary metals through reduce, reuse, remanufacture (including repair and cascade), recycling and recovery. Full metal circulation represents a paradigm shift for metallurgical science, manufacturing technology and the industrial landscape, and more importantly will change completely the way we use natural resources. Full metal circulation means no more mining, no more metal extraction, and no more primary metals. We will make the best use of the metals that we already have.
We propose to establish an Interdisciplinary Circular Economy Centre, CircularMetal, to accelerate the transition from the current largely take-make-waste linear economy to full metal circulation. Our ambition is to make the UK the first country to realise full metal circulation (at least for the high-volume metals) by 2050. This will form an integral part of the government's efforts to double resource productivity and realise Net Zero by 2050. We have assembled a truly interdisciplinary academic team with a wide range of academic expertise, and a strong industrial consortium involving the full metals supply chain with a high level of financial support. We will conduct macro-economic analysis of metal flow to identify circularity gaps in the metals industry and to develop pathways, policies and regulations to bridge them; we will develop circular product design principles, circular business models and circular supply chain strategies to facilitate the transition to full metal circulation; we will develop circular alloys and circular manufacturing technologies to enable the transition to full metal circulation; and we will engage actively with the wider academic and industrial communities, policy makers and the general public to deliver the widest possible impact of full metal circulation. The CircularMetal centre will provide the capability and pathways to eliminate the need for metal extraction, and the estimated accumulative economic contribution to the UK could be over £100bn in the next 10 years.

Description | 1. Through DFT Density function theory simulations we have confirmed that multi component alloy system with 20 elements will deliver an amorphous structure. 2. A 13-component alloy has been made amorphous after 300 hours ball mining (mechanical alloying) from elemental metallic powders. This is the first step to prove the concept that amorphous alloys can be made by a multi-component approach. 3. We also confirmed by experiments that alloy systems with more than 10 elements can have a single phase or duel phase structures. 4. By working with our industrial partner MQP, we have increased the grain refining efficiency of Al-Ti-B grain refiner from 40% to 95% with the potential for further improvement. This, for the first time, has overcome the inconsistency problem associated with Al-Ti-B grain refiners. 5. Our experimental investigation has confirmed that regular electrical pulse treatment (EPT) can extend fatigue life of high strength steel by 100%. This provides the seed technology for rejuvenation. 6. Through experiments we have confirmed that fatigue damage can be closely linked to and assessed with reasonable accuracy by measuring the electrical resistance of the test piece. This suggests that electrical resistance measurement can be used as a potential tool for diagnosing the level of fatigue damage. 7. We have also confirmed that application of electrical pulse treatment (EPT) of as-cast aluminium alloy samples, produced by high pressure die casting (HPDC) can increase their fatigue life by a factor of 3. 8. Our experiments also confirmed that ppm level addition of selected elements can significantly change dendrite arm spacing, which in turn, leads to the dispersion of second phase particles and thus reducing the harmful effect of intermetallic compounds and second phase particles. 9. We have launched the report "Navigating the Transition: Pathways to a Circular Metals Economy in the UK". Building on the full metal circulation vision by 2050, this report describes and visualises the roadmaps to achieve each of the 12 visions. Each transition roadmap identifies a set of milestones and key actions considering the social, technological, economic and regulative aspects. 10. We have also launched the report "Circular Business Models for Metals". This report describes how 20 archetypical circular business models can be applied and enable each of the 12 circular metal visions. As a result, 65 circular metal business strategies were defined. Each strategy can be used to support organisations in the metal value chain to engage circular metal business model solutions. 11. The work funded through this award is furthering the research and literature on economic modelling of circular economy policies related to the steel and aluminium industry. At present, the representation of circular economy within economic analysis is underdeveloped. Therefore, our workplan focused on developing a state-of-the-art economic database and model. Initial results on interactions between circular economy and climate policies were presented in 2022 (at GTAP Conference special session and other presentations) and a paper based on the session is being written-up at present. In 2023, our focus was specifically on the UK and modelling the impacts of changes in steel production to the UK economy. |
Exploitation Route | 1. We share our findings directly with our industrial partners for industrial applications. For example, the mechanisms for improving the efficiency of Al-Ti-B based grain refiners identified by this project has been directly implemented into industrial production process at MQP's production factory (our industrial partner). 2. We apply for further funding from Innovate UK collaborative research project to further increase of technology readiness levels (TRLs) together with our industrial partners. A good example of this is the successful CirConAl project with Constellium and others funded by Innovate UK. 3. We directly implement our outcome into industrial practice through direct industrial funding. e.g., Aeromet International has directly invested in a project at Brunel to implement the recycling technology into aerospace casting. 4.We publish pre competitive results for general usage of metallurgical community. 5.With regard to point 9 above: We are regularly cited by studies in this area. Our method and model was pioneering for representing the circular economy in the steel industry and there is an ongoing collaboration with the GTAP and OECD economic modelling teams. Therefore, outcomes of our work will likely be used by both (a) economic modelers as a basis upon which to undertake CE model development, and (2) by policymakers and industry to help understand impacts of policy options. Also, there are already several further potential projects identified with CircularMetal project partners and international collaborators. 6. We have been working closely with DEFRA, DESNZ and DIT in the UK and the UNECE, which has resulted in the establishment of the UN Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Resource Management (UKCE-SRM) based in the UK. |

Description | 1. The concept of metal health service (MHS) has inspired the idea for metal sevicisation which may eventually change the configuration of metallurgical industry. 2. The high efficiency of Al-Ti-B grain refiner has increased the product sales of MQP and also helped with the environmental protection. 3. The CircularMetal Team has been striving for promoting circular economy to wider stakeholders particularly the general public for increased awareness of environmental protection. 4. The project has undertaken a report by WRAP (as a sub-contractor) on policies for increasing steel recycling in the UK that is aimed at policymakers and industry. It is due to be published in 2023 and the next plan is a roundtable workshop to discuss our modelling results in conjunction with the report. We have also input into the Governments' recent Energy Intensive Industries Exemption review and the Net Zero Review. It is hoped our current modelling analysis in 2023 can contribute to the ongoing debate on the future of the UK steel industry. 5. We have been working closely DEFRA and DESNZ in the UK and UNECE on sustainability of resources, which has resulted in the establishment of the first UN Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Resource Management (UNCE-SRM) in the UK in December 2023. |

Part Of Official Scheme? | No |
Geographic Reach | International |
Primary Audience | Industry/Business |
Results and Impact | The SALEMA project aims to reduce the dependency on critical raw materials (CRMs) such as silicon and magnesium in aluminium alloys. One objective is to develop new aluminium alloys that minimise the primary sourcing of CRMs, by maximising their sourcing from scrap metal recycling. The suitability and performance of these new aluminium alloys will be evaluated for three different manufacturing processes (high pressure die casting, extrusion and stamping) that will be used to produce five demonstrators representing different e-vehicles parts. The integration of scrap metal recycling is essential to create a sustainable circular economy, serving as a reliable source for high-quality alloy. The workshop addressed the challenges and opportunities of CRMs reduction for aluminium alloys in e-vehicles. Synergies with other EU projects were analysed. |

Primary Audience | Industry/Business |
Results and Impact | A webinar organised by Prof. Jan Godsell to launch WMG's report 'Steeling for a sustainable future: How could the UK steel industry compete through supply chain?'. The report is a collaboration between Supply Chain Research Group (SCRG), Advanced Steel Research Centre (ASRC), WMG at the University of Warwick and industrial partners. A sustainable UK steel industry is important to the future growth of the UK. As we are in a transition towards the low carbon economy, it is inevitable that the steel industry will move to a scrap-based model, which enables us to fully utilised recyclable materials than mine from the ground. This provides a great opportunity for UK steel manufacturers to rethink how they could gain a competitive advantage through technology and supply chain innovation. This webinar presented an overview of key findings in the report, including: - Current landscape of the UK steel industry - Assessing the current scrap steel supply chain to identify issues - Strategies and enablers to build a sustainable supply chain - Following the presentation, there will be an interactive panel discussion on the key findings. |
