Description This research has developed models to allow the design of enhanced oil production methods for downhole upgrading and extraction of heavy oil. The ability to conduct upgrading underground using in-situ combustion methods significantly improves efficiency and decreases environmental impact. Due to the large expense of field trials and production runs it is essential to have good computer simulations and experimental data with which to predict performance at field-scale.

The research has improved understanding of the fundamental fluid mechanics of flow in heterogeneous porous media, enabling better prediction of how flow fields will affect distribution of nanoparticulate catalysts.
