High Efficiency Bicycle Wheel Hub Motor

Abstract

CompactCaddy
Ltd are world leaders in the design and manufacture of fractional horsepower
axial flux electric motors. These motors are not only very highly energy efficient, but also
have a high torque output and are very quiet in use.
The aim of this project is to research the electric bicycle market to establish whether the
application of our existing axial flux motor technology would result in a product with unique
selling points at a realistic price. In comparison to existing wheel hub motors, which are based
on radial flux motors, our new product would be lighter, smaller, maintenance free and more
energy efficient. Furthermore when using the motor for regenerative braking the potential
energy recuperated will be higher due to the motor being more efficient in the first place.
For the reasons outlined we believe that a wheel hub motor based on our technology would be
a very attractive proposition to end users, and that due to the technical advantages and lower
costs has a good chance to successfully enter the market.
Note: In an axial flux motor the magnetic field is orientated parallel to the motor shaft,
whereas in a radial flux motor the field is perpendicular to the shaft
