PaEVo - Smart Curb EV-Charging Solution

Lead Participant: ABALONEUK LIMITED

Abstract

By 2035 there will be a ban on sales of combustion engine vehicles in the UK. Electric Vehicles (EVs) are expected to replace them. A large majority of town/city inhabitants have no access to private driveways/garages. This poses a threat to EV roll-out as its very difficult to charge from a home power source without causing a safety hazard to pedestrians (running cables across/over pavements). One in three drivers surveyed for the latest LeasePlan Mobility Insights Report cited a lack of home charging as a barrier to going electric.

Delivering EV-charging infrastructure is a major priority for the UK Government as part of its Road to Zero strategy. This includes support for households without off-street parking, which account for around a quarter of all EV registered in the UK.

Our solution aims to disrupt de-centralised EV charging infrastructure by enabling EV users to charge directly from the curb stone. Our solution is safe, discrete and removes the need for obstructions on the pavement.

Our key feature is a data-driven, digital "Smart Curb" allowing safe charging for those without a driveway or garage. It also enables the sharing of curb-based charging as well as enabling future vehicle to grid storage.

The project will focus on what we consider our main barriers to adoption. These are developing the products technology, enabling the "Smart-Curb" to be technologically robust, useable, and scalable. Product development will enable our prototype and feasibility tests which will drive our route to market strategy, enabling local authority-led customer trials, wider uptake, and rapid growth.

Our solution aims to be cheaper and smarter than competitors. Resulting in a faster roll out with the solution adopted more quickly by customers, demonstrating a highly investable innovation.
