Commercialising a Cost-Effective Ultrafine Particle Monitoring Solution for Enhanced Air Quality and Compliance

Lead Participant: AETOSENSE LTD

Abstract

The project centers on moving a particle monitoring technology into a commercial setting. Our technology can count particles that current air quality sensors cannot detect. These are particles < 300 nm and they comprise 90% of inhaled particles. With a technology that is economically capable of monitoring these particles on a widespread basis, business could see an 11% improvement in workplace productivity and can fill a technology enforcement gap. In addition, by being able to monitor particles <300 nm, Aetosense can contribute to reducing the financial burden of air quality related illnesses on the healthcare system.

The aim here is to move the Aetosense technology out of the laboratory and into established commercial markets, aligning the detection limits, water usage, power needs, and data feedback with end-user requirements. The technology will be introduced first to high-need sectors like respiratory clinics, hospitals, schools, and care homes, as well as wide-spread monitoring areas such as smart cities and construction projects.

Over the next year, we plan to elevate our technology from TRL 4 to 6 concentrating on the market route based on successful trial submarket traction. Aetosense will also devise a scaleup protocol for each submarket, expediting our technology's exploitation. These trials aim to commercialise our technology while furthering UK and EU objectives of widespread ultrafine particle monitoring and improved air quality. Our trials will encompass trialling our technology in the air quality monitoring sector for schools, commercial buildings, and airports.

Our technology is ready to be adopted within specific value chain segments, validated through ICURe Market Discovery, and surpasses options provided by competitors. Clients see our inclusion as a means to gain a competitive advantage and keep their building occupants healthy. Our technology builds on previous developments within the field, but fills a clear market gap to monitor particles < 300 nm for workplace productivity, as well as upcoming regulations.

The project's anticipated outcomes include a market-ready product, enriched by insights and processes from trials and iterative development. We will also formulate technical specs and product designs tailored to each market segment, enabling us to address market needs effectively with innovative solutions, ensuring high market penetration.
