Online tool to enable unemployed & disabled to learn about recycling

Lead Participant: VERTEGEN LTD

Abstract

Vertegen Ltd is a social enterprise concerned with reducing unemployment in the Wirral. The company supports the Government’s Back to Work programme. 500 people have been employed on this programme in the last 9 months, including those with disabilities, special needs and autism. Over the next 3 years we aim to extend this opportunity to ~2000 people. The training we provide equips participants with skills and confidence for success in the workplace and helps them towards finding long-term employment. We currently involve workers in hands-on recycling that reduces landfill & provides recycled materials for reuse by local businesses, avoiding the need to import. Our idea is to further reduce unemployment by enhancing our training programme by developing a course in recycling technologies and by developing an on-line training tool. This will familiarise workers with recycling technologies & materials, develop both IT skills & practical skills.
