Abstract
Using an intersectional framework, this project will investigate factors behind the under-representation of Blacks and Asians, ethnic and religious minorities in teaching. It also aims to explore the recruitment and retention issues of teachers of these under-represented groups as well as to identify strategies for improvement. Using a mixed methods approach, e.g. quantitative data analysis to establish the extent of under-representation, qualitative interviews with students, it will explore how students perceive labels like BAME in connection with career opportunities. Case studies of schools will be used to examine recruitment practices and retention challenges. This project will need enhanced ethics approval due to researching school children under the age of 16. No researcher safety concerns are anticipated as research sites will be schools in South Wales but researcher will avoid working alone in remote areas.
