Surgical Glove with Barrier Breach Indication

Abstract

Surgical gloves are one of the most critical tools used by surgeons and operating theatre workers, providing them with a key line of defence against hospital acquired infections. It only takes one incident (e.g. glove puncture) to increase the probability of becoming infected with a life threatening, blood-borne pathogen during surgery. Therefore it is crucial for surgical gloves to provide a barrier against infections being transferred from patients to surgeons and vice versa. Leanvation have designed a coloured surgical underglove that will be engineered to feature a complex pattern on its outermost surface. This will be worn in combination with a conventional surgical glove and optimised for optical recognition regardless of the contrasting surroundings. Hence, reducing the risk of cross infection during operating procedures by providing an improved means of glove barrier breach indication.
