Validating Ground Motion Models For Critical Engineered Structures Using Fragile Geologic Features

Abstract

Probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) is the regulatory required approach to assessing the earthquake ground motion hazard and risk to a site, forming the basis of seismic safety regulations and building design standards for engineered structures.
Fragile geologic features provide empirical ground motion constraints over long earthquake reoccurrence intervals, during which there is as absence of instrumental data. Geologic data is the only tool available to test, and validate PSHA ground motion models over timescales 1,000 - 1,000,000 years. Analysis of the fragility and age of these features allows direct comparison to be made to the PSHA calculated hazard estimate.
This project will apply finite and discrete element fragility modeling, cosmogenic isotope dating, and strong motion records to test and validate ground motion hazard models for critical engineered structures (i.e. nuclear and hydroelectric power facilities) in California/Nevada (USA) and New Zealand.
