News & Social Media Content Fact Checker and Authenticator

Lead Participant: FMB RADIO CIC

Abstract

In an era where false information can spread rapidly across various digital platforms, this project seeks to empower individuals with the tools to discern truth from falsehood in the content they encounter daily on social media. Our platform will be available as both a website and mobile application, ensuring broad accessibility and user convenience. It will cater to the diverse linguistic needs of African communities by offering support in multiple languages including English, French, Portuguese, Swahili, Arabic, Igbo, Somali, Hausa, Oromo, Yoruba, and Amharic in its initial phase. This multilingual capability ensures that no one is left behind in the fight against misinformation, disinformation and fake news.

The core of the platform's functionality lies in its sophisticated AI-powered fact-checking system and human powered facets. This system employs advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Large Language Models (LLMs) to scan vast interconnected datasets of news articles, analyses, and other relevant content. When a user submits content---be it images, videos, or audio---the AI bot performs an immediate check to verify its authenticity. This process is further enhanced by human oversight, where complex items are reviewed by experts to ensure the highest accuracy and reliability levels are achieved

Users will be able to actively engage with the platform by uploading content they wish to verify or by reporting suspicious content they encounter. The AI bot will provide swift feedback on the authenticity of the content, empowering users with accurate information in real time. This feature is particularly targeted at popular social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter), where most of our communities get news and information from hence the greatest encounters of misinformation and disinformation among our communities.

Beyond its technical capabilities, this project aims to foster a culture of critical thinking and media literacy. By providing a reliable tool for content verification, we aim to reduce the spread of false information and promote informed decision-making within the community. The platform not only serves as a fact-checking tool but also as an educational resource that helps users understand the importance of verifying information before sharing it.
