Discovering Detectors
Lead Research Organisation:
Sphere Science Ltd
Department Name: Grants Administration
Abstract
This project supports public engagement with the amazing and inspiring scientific research at the STFC facility at RAL.
This project aims to
provide a good quality, age-appropriate, remote, practical workshop to explain to upper primary pupils how detectors are used in the work at RAL
focus on a wonder audience by using the index of deprivation or pupil premium data to identify schools with low science capital across the UK.
connect pupils with the personnel who work with detectors at RAL
encourage pupils to talk about the detectors at RAL when they get home
provide teachers with enrichment activities which can use in a cross-curricula way
enhance teachers' confidence to use the ideas and activities with other pupils and with parents
provide scientists, engineers and technicians at RAL with activities that support public communication of their work

Planned Impact
Since lockdown Sarah has been involved in many of the virtual meetings organised by STFC and would be happy to provide a session on this project.
Sphere Science will offer talks at future ASE annual conferences, Teachmeets and INTERACT conferences on this project to give teachers and researchers access to the activities and materials.
Sphere Science will offer an article to Primary Science Review to widen the reach of those informed about the project.
RAL will have the training and equipment to run the workshop in schools or to include activities at family open days.

Organisations
Description | Primary pupils do not understand atoms and a workshop was developed so that primary pupils could understand the importance of detectors using ISIS by considering the research that it supports. By the end of the workshop they know that ISIS can be used to find out about plants, and inside items without breaking them open. |
Exploitation Route | There is a plan to support Rutherford Laboratory staff to present the workshops to their local pupils. |

Description | Since Discovering Detectors workshops ran so successfully there are plans to run the workshop as part of other STFC events and to encourage more STFC staff to use the workshop |
