Preparation of Functional Nanocomposite Particles Using Controlled Radical Polymerisation

Abstract
Nano-structured composites that combine organic and inorganic materials have the potential to display multi-functional properties which can be tailored towards applications in various fields of materials science, as well as optics, catalysis, microelectronics, coatings, biology and medicines. This research programme will be focussed on the design and preparation of several series of (organic/inorganic) latex particles in dispersed (aqueous) media using controlled radical polymerisation. The size, morphology and composition of the particles will investigated and the particles characterised by a wide range of techniques. We will also explore the level of corrosion protection conferred by these new particles. Accordingly, we aim to gain a mechanistic understanding of how the particle structure/composition relates to the corrosion protection provided.
