HubNet: Research Leadership and Networking for Energy Networks
Lead Research Organisation:
Imperial College London
Department Name: Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Abstract
Achieving the decarbonisation of the economy while maintaining the security and reliability of the energy supply will require a profound transformation of the networks used to transport energy into and within the country. While the need is clear, the final shape of these networks is not and getting there will require a considerable amount of research. The creation of a hub will catalyse and focus the research on energy networks in the UK. In particular, this hub will provide research leadership in the field through the publication of in-depth position papers written by leaders in the field and the organisation of workshops and other mechanisms for the exchange of ideas between researchers and between researchers, industry and the public sector. It will also spur the development of innovative solutions by sponsoring speculative research in uncharted areas. The activities of the members of the hub will focus on five areas that have been identified as key to the development of future energy networks:- Design of smart grids, in particular the application of communication technologies to the operation of electricity networks and the harnessing of the demand-side for the control and optimisation of the power system.- Development of a mega-grid that would link the UK's energy network to renewable energy sources off shore, across Europe and beyond.- Research on how new materials (such as nano-composites, ceramic composites and graphene-based materials) can be used to design power equipments that are more efficient and more compact. - Development of new techniques to study the interaction between multiple energy vectors and optimally coordinate the planning and operation of energy networks under uncertainty.- Management of transition assets: while a significant amount of new network equipment will need to be installed in the coming decades, this new construction is dwarfed by the existing asset base. It is thus essential to study how the life of existing equipment can be extended under what is likely to be more extreme conditions. Investigators from Imperial College and the universities of Bristol, Cardiff, Manchester, Southampton and Strathclyde will form the core of this hub. However, other academics carrying out research in energy networks or related topics as well as industrial companies and public bodies will be encouraged to become associated members of HubNet and to contribute to its activities in setting a research agenda and seeking opportunities to collaborate in additional research and development activities.
Planned Impact
HubNet will provide leadership to the energy networks research community through the delivery of position papers written by senior academics who are recognised leaders in this field. These papers will define important research questions and outline possible paths to solutions. HubNet will support the UK power sector in implementing a paradigm shift in network control, in developing interconnected undersea networks of unprecedented scale and complexity and in developing techniques to optimise significant network investment. Systems-level energy infrastructure optimisation together with the integration of communication and energy network infrastructures present critical challenges for the future of energy networks in the UK and beyond. These challenges could be turned into an important commercial opportunity for the UK to gain early experience and lead system integration of advanced future grid technologies (especially the intermittency integration aspects of smart grids), and contribute to creating a new international industry that provides skilled UK-based jobs. The development of North Sea grids is another commercial opportunity where the UK could lead. Europe is home to all the three companies able to supply subsea DC transmission systems. All have significant UK activities and one has its research, development and manufacturing in the UK. Existing links formed by members of the HubNet team will enable technology transfer for this very valuable domestic and export market. There is a wider and additional benefit to UK in installing more wind generation capacity than required domestically and exporting the resulting energy through continental-scale interconnection. HubNet will open new areas of research through two cohorts of ambitious doctoral projects. The first cohort will focus on highly speculative ideas that will bring more creative thinking into the field. The second cohort will be reserved for inter-disciplinary projects that will address knowledge gaps identified by the community and its partners. HubNet will facilitate knowledge exchanges between researchers working directly on energy networks and between those researchers and others working on technologies, concepts and techniques that could be applied to energy networks. Hubnet will also provide mechanisms for interactions between academic researchers and partners from various industrial sectors: energy network, electrical equipment manufacturers, telecommunications equipment manufacturers, system integrators and others. Finally, the research and networking activities of HubNet will attract a larger number of talented young researchers to the area at a time where there is a great and acknowledged need for such people.

Description | Findings from a variety of activities across the consortium have been used in preparation of technical standards and engineering recommendations. Material has been fed into IEC, Cigre Case studies of impact were written for the 2016 Review of the Supergen Programme. These included: 1) Field trial with UK Power Networks of power electronic devices for distribution network management. Operating principles and cost-benefit case originated in SuperGen work. Control algorithms were further developed for the trial. 2) Analysis and control design by a HubNet PhD student was used to support GE Grid (formerly Alstom Grid) in development of a new HVDC power converter design and for optimisation of those design for efficiency and footprint. 3) The Dynamic Transmission Investment Model (DTIM), developed and enhanced in HubNet, was used in formulating evidence to the National Infrastructure Commission that was instrumental in their overall conclusions on the value of "smart" technologies in reducing investment costs in electricity networks. 4) Advances in analytical models for combined gas and electricity networks in HubNet and the Top and Tail project led to new tools, known as CGEN+, used with industrial and public sector clients to examine planning and operation of networks. 5) Real option values were used to analysis the economic value of demand-side repose and other smart technologies and was developed into a methodology for pricing contracts for services. Electricity North West has made use of this methodology. Since the 2016 review the following additional impacts have arisen. Prof Jianzhong Wu and his team working in Top and Tail and HubNet created modelling environments for multi-vector energy systems (COGEN and COGEN+) which enabled analysis of performance and planning of future systems and were detailed as a case study for the 2016 Supergen review. The new impact is a £24M demonstration project, FLEXIS, to trial the technologies developed. The demo area is within the Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council area covering a population of 140,000 people. The area has a variety of distributed generation that includes approximately 690 MW of operational onshore wind farms, solar photovoltaics, biomass and gas turbines. A further 2,175 MW of distributed generation is either under construction or consented. This demonstration will investigate the synergies between well-established electricity and gas networks and optional district heating networks, and will also investigate effective business cases between Tata (the largest energy consumer) and the surrounding communities to share/trade electricity/gas/heat and capitalise on the flexibilities generated from such synergies through enhanced grid service provision. The FUN-LV project run by UK Power Networks, with Imperial College as a partner, was a field trial of power electronics solutions to releasing capacity in low voltage networks. The project stemmed from work conducted by Prof Tim Green in Top and Tail and before that, FlexNet. It was used as an impact case study in last year's Supergen review. Since then the trial has reached a successful conclusion and gone on to win various awards including the Institute of Engineering Technology (IET) "Power Innovation Award in 2016" and Business Green "Green IT Project of the Year 2017" (having previously won a Utility Week Industry Innovation Award in 2015). Prof Goran Strbac's work on long-term investment planning analysis in electricity networks continues to be influential among policy makers. He and his team were authors of (i) "An analysis of electricity system flexibility for Great Britain", November 2016 for the Carbon Trust and (ii) "Roadmap for Flexibility Services to 2030", May 2017 for the Committee on Climate Change. The latter report was extensively cited in the Committee on Climate Change's 2017 Report to Parliament "Meeting Carbon Budgets: Closing the policy gap" on how improved flexibility would reduce the costs of electricity networks. https://www.theccc.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/2017-Report-to-Parliament-Meeting-Carbon-Budgets-Closing-the-policy-gap.pdf. Strbac was also commissioned to produce evidence from the energy system models developed in HubNet in support of the Committee on Climate Change technical report on Net-Zero (May 2019), a report request of the Secretary of State to inform his policy initiative. The report made twenty-three references to Strbac's research. Prof Keith Bell led three items of policy impact: (i) A joint HubNet and UKERC position paper "A Review and Synthesis of Low Carbon Networks Fund projects" written by K Bell, S McArthur and D Frame, August 2016 was widely cited by Poyry in its review of LCNF for Ofgem. https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/system/files/docs/2016/11/evaluation_of_the_lcnf_0.pdf (ii) A response in January 2017 to an Ofgem/BEIS call for evidence on energy system flexibility. http://www.ukerc.ac.uk/news/ukerc-response-to-beis-ofgem-call-for-evidence-on-a-smart-flexible-energy-system-.html (iii) A review of Networks Options Assessment software and data for National Grid. http://www2.nationalgrid.com/UK/Industry-information/Future-of-Energy/Network-Options-Assessment/ |

Results and Impact | Applied Energy Global UNiLAB of Multi-Energy Microgrid is an international virtual lab of collective intelligence, in order to enhance international collaboration for scientific excellence and demonstrate innovative technologies in Multi-Energy Microgrids. It is a joint initiative by the Applied Energy UNiLAB of Distributed Energy & Microgrid (DEM) and the UNiLAB of Synergies between Energy Networks. Multi-energy Microgrids are able to make a good use of local distributed energy resources, especially renewable energy, optimize the synergies between different energy systems (e.g. electricity, gas, heating and cooling systems), enable the applications of novel techniques (e.g. Peer to Peer energy sharing or trading) and provide services to other Microgrids or to the bulk energy networks. Multi-energy Microgrids have the potential to change the paradigm of the whole energy system. Prof. Jianzhong Wu is one of the Co-Directors of this UNiLAB and disseminated the research output of the IOSM project, HubNEt and the OPEN project through this UNilAB. |

Results and Impact | Energy technology and energy transition modelling and scenarios are both politically and economically influential, since governments and investors use the information for polic ymaking, infrastructure planning, business strategy and investments. In the past, forward looking projections made regarding key energy technologies, for example for wind and solar PV, have often significantly underestimated their potential in terms of capacity, cost and contribution to the energy generation mix. At the November 2018 Annual Meeting in Dubai, the Global Future Council (GFC) on Advanced Energy Technologies discussed that energy technology assumptions, such as expected price and performance trajectories, are critical to ensure these scenarios reflect the real potential of these technologies. Rather than contributing to further studies, the Council members are creating an Energy Technologies 2030 platform and invite participation of the various organizations, academics and companies producing scenarios and insights to join in the workstream activities. The full-day workshop brought together key energy scenario producing organizations, as well as energy technology manufacturers and operators to create a vision on the energy technology trajectory which is both fact-based and achievable by 2030. The focus was on cost and performance from a technology and providing a systemic view. Participants analysed the historic developments of low carbon heating technologies and formed a consensus of the potential by 2030 in terms of cost, performance and supply potential. Insights from this workshop contributed to a larger platform portfolio being developed by the GFC on Advanced Energy Technologies. |
