Satellite Applications KE Fellowship

Lead Research Organisation: University of Strathclyde
Department Name: Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Abstract

This fellowship, based at the University of Strathclyde, will enhance the awareness and uptake of environmental satellite data by linking the National Environmental Research Council (NERC) community with a range of new end users through partnerships with the Satellite Applications Catapult.

The role will also focus on further development of a novel polar remote-sensing system to generate potential applications in new sectors and identify possible end-users. This will also include investigation of the technology developments required to enable such a mission.

The objectives of the fellowship will align with those of the Scottish Centre of Excellence in Satellite Applications, and will encompass the University of Strathclyde research networks in Maritime applications within the Physics and Naval Architecture, Marine and Ocean Engineering departments. Partnership with the Offshore Renewables Catapult, also hosted at the University of Strathclyde, and the UK Oil and Gas Collaborative Doctoral Training Centre, and their networks will also allow connection to the Energy sector. Establishing links between such fundamental university research and new industrial end-users will allow the existing environmental satellite data sets to be exploited further than is currently achievable. Connections to other Catapult centres across the UK, and collaboration with the National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO) will also provide a platform to interact with relevant organisations and businesses, thus increasing both the awareness and uptake of existing and new satellite nationwide.
