Description | we support the UK geospatial and insurance industry with specialist products and services helping them return around £500m per year through the use of our services. we provide specialist data services to the OGA to provide information on in-situe stress to aid with planning applications for fracking etc. together with TCA and PHE we provide reports that support COM29 regulations and provide information on the radon levels within the UK. Radon is attributed to around 1000 deaths a year from lung caner. we provide support to the UK infrastructure community around resilience and natural hazards working to support the UK governments Geospatial commission to deliver more impact to UK plc of the UKs geosptial data key areas : policy development, housing, utilities, netzero and enviornmental change |

Title | BGS Civils |
Description | BGS Civils is a suite of national maps of engineering properties based on geological data and the digital 1:50 000 scale geological map - BGS Geology 50k. The primary goal of the product is to provide the key engineering characteristics of the geology of Great Britain to professional users who need simple and rapid access to such information. You might be planning pipeline routes avoiding difficult ground conditions, calculating tender costs for trench excavation or you might need knowledge of ground properties in order to plan your daily activities. The data is provided as GIS shapefiles and are available to licence individually or as a bundle to meet your own requirements. |
Type Of Technology | Webtool/Application |
Year Produced | 2016 |
Impact | BGS civils is being taken up by civil engineers and used in BIM systems - early days but it is already being taken up by our VARS |

Title | Northern Ireland radon potential data set |
Description | The Radon data: radon potential dataset is the definitive map of Radon Affected Areas in Northern Ireland, created jointly by Public Health England* (PHE) and the BGS using long-term radon measurements made in over 23,000 homes across Northern Ireland (without affecting householders' confidentiality), combined with geological map data. The dataset includes a built in 75 m 'buffer', made up of 50 m to allow for the margin of error in the geological lines, and 25 m to represent the average extent of a home. PHE recommends that radon levels should be reduced in homes where the annual average is at or above 200 becquerels per cubic metre (200 Bq m-3) - this is termed the Radon Action Level. PHE defines Radon Affected Areas as those with one per cent chance or more of a house having a radon concentration at or above the Action Level of 200 Bq m-3. |

Results and Impact | Jane Evans, Katy Lee, Katy Mee, Clive Cartwright and Carolyn Chenery presented a paper at at the 7th international symposium on biomolecular archaeology 14-16th September 2016. Ultimate aim of this project is to to produce the first digital, interrogable, statistically constrained, isotope domain map for Britain. As part of our development plan we will link the Sr biosphere map with the published British oxygen isotope map (Darling et al 2003), and other isotope data, to create a multi-layer, multi-purpose resource for environmental, food security, and ecological studies. Once the model is established it can be tested so that it can be developed, refined, and added to as new data becomes available. This year we will model Sr isotope biosphere variation based on the interaction of geological, climate, and geographic contributions. The new approach is to construct a mosaic of 1 km hexagon cells in GIS space. These are linked to the underlying geology and are classified according to the type of deposit that comprise more than 50% of their area. Data from designated rock types will be assigned a value and probability to each appropriate hexagon. These values are retained within the hexagons which can be interrogated. |
