Emptied lands and otherworlds: Exploring the ecopoetics of Scottish Gaelic folklore in the Anthropocene.

Lead Research Organisation: University of Edinburgh
Department Name: College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sci

Abstract

By undertaking practice-led research into Gaelic bardic literature and Oral traditions I will produce artworks that engage ecocritically with Scottish folklore. This will involve undertaking primary archival research in collections at the University of Edinburgh and Sabhal Mor Ostaig in order to locate instances of ecological knowledge extant in Scottish folklore. By making reference to these resources and the work of contemporary ecological scholars, I aim to understand the ways in which local indigenous knowledge may provide alternative pathways to navigating urgent contemporary environmental issues. By taking a practice based approach to this research, I shall create outcomes that reach a wide demographic, engaging a variety of academic fields and the traditional and contemporary arts.
