Enhanced Efficiency and Safety in the Handing of Palletised Products for Transportation in Containers (SafeLoad)

Abstract

Transport containers, sometimes known as Intermodal Containers (IC’s) are essential in
storing and moving palletised goods efficiently and securely. There are 17 million IC’s
globally. The traffic of palletised goods in IC’s is predicted to double by 2020 (World
Shipping Council). As IC traffic increases so does the demand for efficiency in
loading/unloading of palletised products. There are however concerns relating to: (i)
Efficiency; improving the throughput rate of products at in-bound distribution centres and
third party logistics providers is pivotal in increasing business efficiency and alleviating
commonplace bottlenecks on the unloading dock; (ii) Safety; loading/unloading of palletised
products involves using two fork lift trucks simultaneously to strategically place the pallets in
the IC. This is particularly challenging and dangerous when placing pallets on top each other
in the confined spaces of IC’s.
We have identified a gap in the market to develop a new more efficient and safer method of
loading/unloading palletised goods in IC’s (SafeLoad).
SafeLoad is expected to reduce palletised product loading time by 50% saving the sector and
will deliver a new business foundation for our business RG Site Maintenance Ltd.
