Enhanced production of whey protein for animal feed

Abstract

Through applying novel microbubble mass transfer technology this project seeks to establish a cost effective dewatering methodology to triple the concentration of whey. Whey is a highly digestable animal feed. Increasing the dry matter content (dmc) will increase its availability to UK farms as transportation costs currently limit its circluation. Its inclusion in animal rations will be increased, optimising nutritional value to the animal & thus maximising net weight gain. This would reduce inclusion of supplements & other less nutritionally valuable imported proteins such as soya. Optimum process conditions & facilitating technology are to be identified to establish a commercially & technically effective evaporation procedure. Degregation of the protein/lactose, water purity & energy requirements are key risks to be addressed. Dairy-based field trials will be integral to the project.
