Abstract
The European Commission, with the support of the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers, has proposed greater and more coherent harmonisation of the national laws of contract. The research project aims to provide a critical assessment of not only the effectiveness of harmonisation or unification of contract law in building a single market, but also of the profound though hitherto largely unacknowledged implications of moves towards a code of contract law for the realisation of social justice in a social market and respect for cultural diversity in Europe.
