Transforming Auxetic Metamaterials into Superhydrophobic Surfaces
in Small Structures
| Description | We have analytically modelled surfaces with a specific honeycomb geometry and demonstrated through modelling the wetting response of the surface under strain. We have shown that a negative Poisson's ratio (auxetic) mechanical metamaterial, one which when stretched also expands in the orthogonal lateral direction, displays a unique dependence of the superhydrophobicity on tensile strain as the space between solid elements of the auxetic lattice expands (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202300458). We also demonstrated the metamaterial lattice is penetrated by a liquid when its strain state is changed (doi: 10.1063/5.0173464). This work has informed the experimental programme being undertaken by our collaborators at Edinburgh University, which has experimentally confirmed our analytical model predictions. We have extended the micromechanical modelling work (above) to a macromechanical approach, where the wetting response with strain is purely dependent on the effective mechanical properties and knowledge of the initial solid fraction of the material. This is enabling us to broaden the predictive capability beyond the initial honeycomb lattice considered initially and, when coupled with an atlas of auxetic metamaterial structures we have also compiled, will enable surfaces with bespoke wetting properties to be designed, made and tested. We have also reconciled the surface of a natural system known to have interesting wetting responses with a known auxetic lattice structure, and are developing models for the strain-responsive wetting properties to drive the development of nature inspired wetting surfaces. |
| Exploitation Route | The principles we have discovered offer a new approach to designing superhydrophobic materials for self- cleaning surfaces, droplet transportation, droplet encapsulation and oil-water separation. We are opening up a new field at the intersection of wettability and mechanical metamaterials and it is likely our research will provide impetus for significant new academic activity and publications. We are already attracting preliminary interest, as a result of our dissemination activities in Years 2-4 of the project, from industry on the potential of strain responsive wetting of auxetic mechanical metamaterials. |

| Description | As a result of the dissemination activities discussions have been held with companies in the sports apparel and aerospace sectors, and more broadly via the EPSRC UK Metamaterials+ Network. The immediate impact has been to raise awareness within these potential end users of the research leading to discussions that have potential to lead to further new avenues of research and development within the companies. |

| Results and Impact | On Friday, 21st of April, 2023, Dr. Steven Armstrong, Dr. Hernán Barrio-Zhang and members of the WISE lab organised an outreach event during School of Engineering Post-Graduate Conference hosted by the University of Edinburgh. Along with the participation from P7 students from the Preston Street Primary School, the outreach event consisted of a show-and-tell table where the group designed special experiments to highlight the research topics of the Institute of Multiscale Thermofluids and the importance of the research we perform. The experiments covered fundamental concepts of wetting and capillarity which were demonstrated though hydrophobic and ultra-smooth coatings such as Slippery Omniphobic Covalently Attached Liquid (SOCAL) surfaces, Slippery Liquid Infused Porous Surfaces (SLIPS), PEGylated surfaces and Glaco. This also included demonstrations on macro scale auxetic metamaterials with discussions on their wetting properties. The P7 students were tasked with going around the show-and-tell tables from the different institutes in the School of Engineering and voting for the ones that they learned from the most. Our group, the WISE lab, was voted as the best outreach table by the students. |
