Feasibility Study for a Urea-based Fertiliser and Distributed Processing Network
Lead Participant:
VANDENBERGHUK LTD
Abstract
Price inflation and the environmental impacts of synthetic fertilisers are driving a demand for natural alternatives.
The price of synthetic fertiliser has increased by 140% over the past year to over £1,000 per tonne. This puts our rural economy, the livelihoods of farmers, and the UK food supply chain under intense pressure. The government is anticipated to incentivise adoption of natural and sustainable alternatives via The Sustainable Farming Incentive Scheme.
The natural fertiliser market is growing at 11.5% CAGR with a global market value of £12bn. This project will explore the market feasibility, supply chain and circularity of scaling a natural urea-based fertiliser via localised production units situated before the farm-gate.
The outcomes will include:
1. Market engagement and compliance with organics standards
2. Technical feasibility of a new production process
3. A scalable commercial model
