MFC Commercialisation through continued Research, Networking and Collaboration (MFCC-RNC)

Lead Research Organisation: University of the West of England
Department Name: Faculty of Environment and Technology

Abstract

One cost-effective way of maximising the utility of the microbial fuel cell technology in scaling-up, is to invest in raw materials that inherently possess multi-functionality but also produce composites (through heating and impregnation) that introduce multiple functionalities to different 'passive' substrata. The material multi-functionality will exploit the team's new findings regarding internal resistance governance, and several key properties have been identified, which will require further investigation. These primarily focus (amongst many other things) on cost of raw materials & production; efficacy in a broad range of environmental /operating conditions; optimal structural porosity characteristics for moisture control and concomitant ion conductivity; modularity of stack design for plug & play systems. These explorations can only benefit the society if implemented in practical applications, which can demonstrate their value to the public; e.g. the EcoBot platform, urine utilisation and intelligent toilets, as well as MFC domestic battery chargers. Such multidisciplinary work can progress at an accelerated pace if appropriate collaboration with world leaders is established, which is at the core of this programme of work. The Fellowship pioneering work on MFC-powered robots and devices paved the way to scale-up, by introducing the 'miniaturisation & multiplication' approach - an area that the UK maintains the lead. This forms the basis for the new direction research in materials and manufacturing. It is an area, which has so far received very little attention, yet it is directly on the critical path towards realising impact, which can be achieved through the commercialisation of the more mature aspects of the work. It is therefore both timely and at the forefront of the MFC research, thereby strengthening the UK lead in this pioneering area.

Planned Impact

The proposed work is stemming from the Career Acceleration Fellowship work, which has already demonstrated high impact and reached policy makers at Government level. The inclusion of the EcoBot work in David Willetts's "Eight Great Technologies" book from Policy Exchange (UK's leading think tank), is testament to this effect as is the mentioning of the fly-eating robot by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, in his recent address to the Royal Society. The New Directions programme is proposing to take this highly recognised work and bring it to the public domain through practical implementation (translation) and commercialisation that will directly benefit the UK plc and assist in meeting its 2050 targets. Fundamental research in pioneering areas (natural nut shell-made MFCs, biodegradable materials and impregnated ceramics) will continue as well as a strand in more blue sky research (biosensing, unconventional computation), which will be disseminated through high-end Journal publications. As science evolves, prestigious publishers are introducing open-access publication options, which will be exploited where possible. Furthermore and to reach general audiences beyond commercial end users and academia, public engagement activities will continue to be pursued as part of the main dissemination strategy.

A kind note to the Reviewers: The Case for Support has been written to include a great level of scientific evidence for the future opportunities and it is hoped that through the description of the work it becomes clear that the value of the proposed New Directions programme *as a whole* is greater than the sum of the individual parts. There is a clear thread running through all work packages, and it is with this collective and consolidated effort, that maximum impact can be achieved.

Degrenne N (2013) Bi-directional electrical characterisation of microbial fuel cell. in Bioresource technology

Title MFC artistic display at Whitechapel Gallery as part of the "Is this Tomorrow?" exhibition
Description A fog-screen displays images of life coming to an end, and further life generated from this very same process. MFCs are part of the exhibit next to the fog-screen demonstrating 'live bricks' i.e. MFCs made out of brick material inoculated with bacteria, to show the living concept of the message conveyed by the fog screen and also inspire discussion about households of the future. The MFC output can be used to power e-ink displays
Type Of Art Artefact (including digital)
Year Produced 2019
Impact Reviews have been written about the whole exhibition and two media in particular picked up on the MFCs specifically (Dezeen is one of these)

Description 1. Urine has been proven to be an excellent fuel for direct electricity generation, which is the key finding currently being exploited for commercialisation.

2. Stacks of small of MFCs have been employed to power a number of practical applications, such as wristwatches, clocks, LEDs, micro-controllers, pumps, robots, motors. The technology is now at a stage of powering lights with external conditions (outdoor wider radius) capability.

3. The use of ceramics as both the ion exchange membrane and chassis for MFCs has revealed the capability of synthesising a liquid (called catholyte) which has got potent disinfectant properties, and is considered as a valuable output for remote sanitation-poor environments.

4. The cascade configuration of MFCs has demonstrated the killing of pathogenic microorganisms, which would be alien to the constituent electroactive biofilm responsible for electricity generation.

5. The production of catholyte, as an active filtrate through the ceramic membrane during the electricity generation process, has already been demonstrated as a potent disinfectant and efficacious bactericidal agent, with bacterial viable counts. This is being pursued further through new grants and has now been published.

6. Electrode doping with activated carbon or graphene, for both the anode and cathode, is proving to be an excellent way of improving energy density and we now have individual small scale (3.6mL total volume) MFCs running actuators directly.
Exploitation Route Direct implementation in wastewater treatment plants

Direct implementation in toilets

Direct implementation in developing countries

Sanitation improvement

Electricity generation in remote areas

Renewable power unit for standalone electronic devices

An international patent has been granted; a second international patent is pending; a third patent is in preparation

Licensing agreements are being negotiated with international manufacturing/commercial partners for the commercialisation of our technology. There is also a more focussed market entry activity with the help of an industrial partner (Whiffaway).

A full commercialisation activity has been undertaken with Oxentia (Oxford University Innovation) providing full support, in the areas of tech transfer, patent and IP, industrial collaboration and company setup. Oxentia is funded separately by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to help our Bristol BioEnergy Centre commercialise its Microbial Fuel Cell technology through licensing agreements with international commercial partners.

Description The scientific findings from this research have been implemented in practical applications, not just for proof-of-concept purposes, but also for bringing the microbial fuel cell technology closer to market and the society. The work from the New Directions grant that has stemmed from the Career Acceleration Fellowship has been the main reason for the further funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and also for the acceleration of the career and the establishment of the new Centre of Excellence (BBiC). The award holder has also been promoted to full Professor as a direct result of the new Centre of Excellence establishment. Our commercialisation activity is now pursuing licensing agreements with multiple international commercial partners; this is funded separately by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, for commercialising multiple aspects of the MFC technology, originating from this and the Career Acceleration Fellowship awards. MFCs are being installed for trials or exhibitions, as a means of improving visibility and bringing the technology closer to the public. Social acceptability studies are revealing a high degree of social acceptance for a technology that valorises waste to produce useful energy, fertiliser and disinfectant.

Impact Pee Power® systems have been installed in school and rural community environments in Uganda, Kenya and South Africa, where there was previously lack of electricity and poor sanitation. The use of Pee Power® systems has provided electricity for powering primarily lights, in these remote locations, which has been welcome as a safety net especially during the hours of darkness. In addition, the treated effluent from the Pee Power® installations has been directly discharged to the land or soak-away systems as a treated wastewater.
