Abstract
There is currently no tool suitable for SME design and architecture firms to measure the carbon on their projects in a relevant, accurate, and affordable manner. Environmental design architects Studio Bark and climate-tech startup Looper intend to develop a brand new carbon counting tool specifically tailored to small architecture and design businesses. For the UK to meet its zero carbon targets, it is imperative that businesses of all sizes are able to measure and reduce their carbon impacts, using real-life, comprehensive source data.
Our affordable and user-friendly tool calculates the embodied (lifecycle of building materials) and of a project. The designer simply inputs data such as type of material, or volume used, and the comprehensive tool collates all data into usable figures. These figures are easy for any designer to use, both for making better design decisions and giving high quality carbon reporting.
As 72% of UK's architecture practices are smaller than ten members of staff, and the built environment industry is responsible for 42% of total UK carbon emissions, there is a clear environmental and commercial need for innovation that tackles the issue of carbon in construction while making these businesses more competitive on a global stage.
