Novel Photonic Approaches to Imaging the Brain

Lead Research Organisation: University of Glasgow
Department Name: School of Physics and Astronomy

Abstract

The past few years have seen a surge of interest in brain imaging techniques and the development of new approaches that, in combination with computational techniques and AI promise a next generation of neuroscience tools. Most of these techniques rely on fMRI or MEG but optical approaches are also promising in view of the possibility to adopt these "in the wild". This project will look at novel ways of using optical and fNIRS approaches, based also on the Kernel brain reading device available in Glasgow, in combination with other technologies (MEG, EEG) and AI for imaging the brain at low but sufficient resolutions to eb relevant for the detection of neurodegeneration and in general, cognitive function. This project will also involve collaborations with the Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging, with computer scientists and with the MEG group in Nottingham University.
