Department Name: School of Physics and Astronomy

Abstract

Observations & methods to discover Earth-like exoplanets, Observations & methods to characterise small exoplanets around Sun-like stars, Modelling Exoplanet Atmospheres to Understand their Diversity.

The overall aim of the project will be to characterise the diversity of planets orbiting other stars (exoplanets). In particular, this will involve modelling the atmospheres and surfaces of different types of exoplanets, spanning rocky planets to giant, Jupiter-like worlds. The project targets will be to develop computational modelling methods, including 1D radiative-convective atmospheric models and Bayesian inference modelling. These models will be used to propose new telescope observations of exoplanets, and to interpret existing and upcoming observations, for example from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).
