'Practicing Alternative Historiographies: Contemporary Material Performance Practices in Turkey, Lebanon and Iran'

Lead Research Organisation: University of Glasgow
Department Name: School of Culture & Creative Arts

Abstract

Where most histories of object performance tend to draw on Western theatre practices, this project looks to outline a different trajectory. One that draws on Middle Eastern practices including contemporary theatre that uses objects and puppets instead of human actors, and wider cultural practices that use objects to perform a set of interventions within social and political spheres. My project will offer an alternative historiography of material performance practices that question Western anthropocentric legacies and mobilise performance as a lens to explore and intervene in a politics of displacement and migration.
