New techniques for calibration of Imaging Air-Cherenkov Telescopes

Lead Research Organisation: University of Oxford
Department Name: Oxford Physics

Abstract

The student will focus on new methods for calibration of Imaging Air-Cherenkov Telescope (IACT) arrays, using UAV's flying above the IACT array. The project falls in the area of particle astrophysics with main focus on experiment and instrumentation. The project will involve work with STFC-funded experiments H.E.S.S. and CTA. Collaborators will include the University of Durham (Prof Anthony Brown as co-supervisors) and the University of Namibia for long-term attachment at the H.E.S.S. experiment. The student will also undertake some theory/data analysis work on astrophysical data form the experiments, with a view to exploiting the enhanced energy resolution that is expected to result from the new calibration techniques.
