Abstract

We are in the midst of a global green wave, with climate catastrophes, new laws and regulation, and an increase in visible environmental activism all supercharging demand for more sustainable products in our homes and work environments.

As the transition to net zero accelerates there needs to be a stronger focus on sustainable solutions delivered by businesses, and universal solutions for consumers which empowers them to make informed decisions and demand better.

But while consumers are calling out for more sustainably produced products, 48% say they don't have enough information to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle ([Deloitte, 2021][0]).

It is not surprising, when the sustainable shopping journey is so fragmented and complicated. Consumers have to browse through a whole host of different website, platforms and apps to learn about issues, shop for sustainable swaps, verify claims of brands, and finally to track their impact. Often there are issues with each of these steps -- from a lack of verified green claims, to broad generic carbon averages being used to calculate impact.

Canopey provides much-needed clarity, with its educational features that help consumers learn about all the ways they can reduce the impact of the products they buy, and with its Impact Calculator, which provides objective metrics including the carbon emissions, water and plastic waste saved for products compared to the mainstream, less sustainable alternatives. This much-needed clarity will create trust between businesses and consumers looking to reduce their impact.

Canopey empowers consumers, helping them understand complex sustainability issues, identify where they can make positive changes, and visualise the total impact for purchases across an array of different product categories. The platform is already becoming a 'sustainability hub' and a place of trust for consumers, highlighting other low-impact products 'within the Canopey', and providing a place to learn about issues and explore solutions like offsets and regeneration projects.

Canopey's Impact Calculator also helps businesses measure and communicate their overall impact in an increasingly discerning and competitive market, showing they care about these issues.

The project has an exciting year ahead, with Innovate UK backing, well-known supermarket brands selling and many more signing up each month, and an established community of thousands of people tracking and sharing their impact.
