An innovative AI-assisted e-scooter that features a unique lighting and warning system that will improve visibility and safety for riders and pedestrians

Lead Participant: HILO EV LIMITED

Abstract

Hilo EV Limited (Hilo), a UK micromobility SME with a core project team of Robin Harris, James Browne, Ashley May and David Evans, is developing an intelligent, full-perimeter illumination system that significantly enhances safety by making riders more visible.

Many vehicle accidents occur at night, and e-scooter riders are vulnerable to facial and head injuries (Science Direct, 2021). Visibility is key for safety. Hilo's addressable LED system provides red lights to the rear, amber to the sides and white to the front. The active control architecture and AI image processing technology enable the scooter to automatically warn other road users of its presence, proximity and intended movements while providing multi-sensory feedback to the rider. Combined with a unique larger front wheel, that enhances stability and control, Hilo promises to deliver micromobility products that feature safety front-and-centre of the offering.
