Anaerobic Digestion Network

Lead Research Organisation: University of Southampton
Department Name: Faculty of Engineering & the Environment

Abstract

This proposal is for a Network in Anaerobic Digestion (AD) that will promote and facilitate the scientific research needed to support the UK's growing AD industry. The research will both address immediate challenges in terms of improving process efficiencies and broadening the range of acceptable feedstocks; and encourage diversification into the novel area of industrial anaerobic biotechnology through the development of new bio-based products and processes. The underpinning research required is interdisciplinary, with molecular biologists and microbial ecologists working on the role of metabolic pathways and community structure, through to process scientists and technologists translating these insights into practical processes. Process engineers will consider how these can best be implemented in novel reactor designs and operating protocols, and how to maximise resource efficiency by advance process integration and optimisation; while environmental and social scientists will analyse the potential benefits and impacts of these new technologies and evaluate their implications for industry, society and the environment. The purpose of the Network is to create an integrated AD research community which draws these specialists together. To achieve this, support is needed for integration and expansion of the existing research base, along with effective means of dissemination and stronger engagement of the academic community with the various industry stakeholders. The Network will encourage academic/industry interaction by means of themed workshops organised in conjunction with the main trade associations, including the Anaerobic Digestion and Biogas Association (ADBA) and the Renewable Energy Association (REA). All potential Network members were initially canvassed concerning their interest in proposed working groups. More than 120 positive responses have been received from ~85 organisations (~70 academic, ~50 industry). Once officially launched, the Network is expected to expand further as research students and junior researchers become involved in its activities. The Network itself will be based around research-focused working groups with co-Chairs from industry and academia. These will identify the research needed to support end-user businesses in developing competitive bio-based technologies in both the bioenergy and biorefinery fields. Proof-of-concept funding will be provided for a range of highly innovative projects. This with other networking activities will encourage the formation of cross-disciplinary consortia, and thus put UK teams in a prime position to respond to national and international research calls such as the BBSRC IBBE Catalyst and the EU's Horizon 2020 programme. Through its prestigious International Advisory Group it will also raise the profile of UK scientists and help to establish the UK's position as a leader in this branch of industrial biotechnology. The Network is thus a vital element in developing the UK's position as a world leader in innovative anaerobic technology with the potential to open up new markets and research areas. A 5-year duration has been chosen to ensure long-term development of strong collaborative research at both UK and international levels, reinforced by research events, secondments and exchanges. The proposed scale is essential both to encompass all the required disciplines and types of expertise, and to secure the establishment of an effective and interactive AD research community that will endure beyond the BBSRC funding.

Technical Summary

The Network addresses scientific and technical challenges in the development of anaerobic biotechnology, drawing on the expertise of leading academics underpinned by new tools and concepts. As well as enhancing the performance of anaerobic digestion (AD) as a second generation bioenergy process, these open up new areas of application in the creation of value-added bio-based products, widening the process scope to a biorefinery. The Network promotes the use of meta-omic approaches to explore systems biology and community structure, and map its metabolic function. By these techniques a fundamental understanding of interactions related to product groups can be achieved, leading to the development of a synthetic biology with enhanced functionality and control. Scientists using these techniques will be able to develop hypothesis-driven research, in conjunction with engineering academics who will be faced with the practicalities of design and operation of such systems. Key challenges include the creation of alternative products from the intermediate VFA pool generated in the conventional AD process. Concepts such as bioelectrochemical harvesting, reductive hydrogenation and chain elongation and formation of PHA polymers create the prospect of advanced liquid fuels and bioplastics by innovative manipulation of metabolic pathways. Bio-molecular tools open up the possibility of improved diagnostics and advanced on-line process control, topics of immediate interest to industry. The Network is expansive and includes a knowledge base on alternative biomass sources. Process technologists are thus brought together with plant breeders, algologists, and soil scientists to develop sustainable feedstocks, either directly or using innovative pre-treatments. The technical agenda will be formulated by industry/academic working groups funnelling information and suggestions to steering and international advisory groups, who will sift these for areas in which major advances can be made.

Planned Impact

The Anaerobic Digestion Network has been specifically planned and designed to achieve the following impacts:
- It will lead to major improvements in interaction between the key players in the field of anaerobic biotechnology. This sector is currently fragmented, with poor links both between research disciplines (fundamental/applied, upstream/downstream) and between the academic and business communities. The latter represents a particular challenge due to the high proportion of SMEs with little expertise in making use either of research output or of the various sources of UK and EU funding designed to provide access to research. The Network activities and resources are explicitly design to address these issues and the level of interest already shown indicates a high likelihood of success from this timely initiative.
- It will facilitate a step-change in integrated cross-disciplinary research involving biosciences, biochemistry and engineering in combination with marine and agro-technologies and environmental and social sciences. These interactions will initially be promoted through the interlinked working groups, and subsequently through the preparation of joint project proposals and formation of consortia to address major research challenges in the field.
- It will make a major contribution to establishing the UK as an internationally recognised partner of choice in the area of anaerobic biotechnologies. This will be achieved both by the formation of a unique interlinked community of scientific expertise; and by promotion of high-level interaction with a spectrum of leading international scientists on the International Advisory Group.
- In particular, it will showcase UK expertise in research utilising genomic, systems biology and synthetic biology approaches; while also driving forward the research agenda in these areas by creating an ideal locus for the identification of links between genetics and functionality, supported by the two-way flow of data between 'deep science' approaches and pilot or full-scale industrial practice.
- It will provide a significant boost to innovative cross-disciplinary research through the provision of proof-of-concept funding to stimulate the exploration of new ideas and the generation of initial data as a basis for constructing competitive research funding proposals
- It will facilitate the construction of high-quality full-scale consortium proposals to a range of national and international funding sources, including the IBBE Catalyst and the EU Horizon 2020 programme.
-It will promote knowledge exchange and the translation of research from fundamental science to practical applications in the field of applied biotechnology, creating business opportunities for industry and SME partners to develop novel bio-based products and provide process control tools based on new concepts of metabolic functionality.
- It will provide a source of evidence and expertise in support of UK and EU policy in the fields of industrial biotechnology and bioenergy, through the direct participation of bodies such as the Environment Agency (EA), the Waste and Resources Action Programmme (WRAP) and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
- It will support the personal development of Network members at all levels, by providing opportunities for interaction between industry and academic researchers, and creating lasting links (both nationally and internationally) between different disciplines and communities.

Description The Anaerobic Digestion (AD) Network is one of 13 Networks in Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy (NIBB) that have been funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC). Funds have been made available for us to support academic-business interactions and Proof of Concept studies. The Network is now approaching the end of its five year lifespan.
The work has had a number of broad impacts:
1. Finding resolution or identifying further work on a number of problems that business faces with regards to aspects of AD.
2. Exploring proofs of concept in areas as diverse as metabolomics, biomethanisation, membrane cleaning, production and extraction of intermediate bulk chemicals, redesigning hydrolysis reactors, recovering fatty acids using membrane freeze-thaw processes and microbially enhancing phyto-active compounds for growing plants.
3. Providing the AD community with a useful modelling tool, as well as Life Cycle Assessment information on biomethane for transport from waste and greenhouse gas abatement by small-scale AD.
4. Showcasing the latest research and its importance to industry by working with trade bodies and companies, and providing specialist workshops where specialist can exchange latest research.
5. Mentoring Early career researchers and young professionals through networking events (academic & industrial), secondments and attendance at industry leading conferences..
We have seen papers being published, follow-on grant applications, some industrial activity encouraged by research findings, and new academic and industrial collaboration mixes as stakeholder awareness of the value of these cross-disciplinary partnerships which extends far beyond just 'biogas'.
ADNet's activities will be carried on in two of the second-generation BBSRC NIBBs: the Environmental biotechnology Network (EBNet) hosted by the University of Southampton and the Carbon cycling Network (CCNet) hosted by the University of Nottingham
Exploitation Route 1. Academics are continuing to work with business in order to solve further challenges or to explore other aspects of the work initiated through the Business Interaction Vouchers.
2. The Proof of Concept projects proved to be a very useful way of initiating fundamental research ideas and exploring how these can be taken forward for further funding. This has alreadfy been successful in a number of instances.
3. The AD modelling tool has been downloaded and used by trade bodies, farmers, architects, community groups, consultants, people interested in the technology and others. Life cycle assessment work has been used to inform policy makers, regulators, MPs, Peers and to provide information for publication by both academics and non-academics.
4. In a relatively nascent industry, trade bodies and the industries they represent are increasingly becoming aware of the importance of research, which potentially helps them, for example, to operate more efficiently/effectively.
5. A number of ECRs have gone on to successfully find employment or further research work, not least helped by the fact that they have had opportunities through the AD Network to meet with their peers and industry..
6. In addition to the above, some of the GCRF work indicated that there was interest in a NIBB Network style model to act as a resource and focal point with a wider international remit.

Description This is a Research Network to facilitate the development of proof-of-concept ideas by academic Network members through the allocation of small grants. There is a reporting mechanism on the outcome of these grants in the BBSRC Extranet. 2015-Business Interaction Vouchers (BIV) have produced several pieces of work which have had a particularly wide impact. These are small funds (now, up to £10K) where a business can 'hire' an academic to solve a problem. The first of these was a study by Dr David Styles which looked at 'Evaluating cost-effective greenhouse gas abatement by small-scale anaerobic digestion'. The BIV work was included in a book on farm anaerobic digestion by Jon Letcher and was widely used by the Renewable Energy Association and the AD Bioresources Association to inform Government on this sector. This was part of the information which informed Baroness Miller who spoke on behalf of the technology on 3 Mar 16. A second BIV 'Providing a scientific evidence base for public subsidy support of biomethane for transport from waste' was also designed to inform policy makers, regulators and others. A third BIV (late 2014, delivery 2015) created a modelling tool for the UK AD Industry. This has been used widely by farmers, policymakers, students, engineering consultancies and others in order to model the AD process and to compare their real world results with those from the model. 2017 - Further BIV and PoC funding outcomes will be on the extranet. We have provided input to a number of public consultations on relevant subjects ranging from IB policy to EA charging. One area which is difficult to capture here is that we have provided expertise to a number of other projects, e.g. a decision-making tool for the Stepping Up project (a three year EPSRC funded project - see their Stakeholder link on steppingupnexus.org.uk), information on community and technical aspects of AD to the Isabel project. We have also provided research data and contacts from our network to the trade association and answered a number of enquiries from stakeholders in this sphere. 2018-A final Proof of Concept call on 'A scalable fluidized bioelectrochemical reactor for enhanced anaerobic energy recovery' resulted in the research team discovering that they would have to take an alternative approach to the one they had originally intended, and they plan to use these results to facilitate an application for RCUK/regional funding. Four BIV projects were carried out. One on 'Spatial optimisation of farm-scale AD and biorefinery developments in Wales' pulled together a working group from government (including Welsh government, Natural Resrouces Wales and regional planners), industry, trade bodies (ADBA, REA, NFU, CLA) and the farming community to produce a research monograph which will be utilised by these stakeholders to support policy development and coordination of cross-sectoral initiatives. Further BIVs worked with SMEs to help with specific business challenges across several research areas with the common denominator of both providing a foundation for future collaborations and identification of further work/funding to create a pathway to specific commercial solutions. We have advised/supported trade bodies/industry on elements of recent consultations including the Clean Growth Strategy, Clean Air Strategy, as well as promoting the value of AD in the context of DFID activities and funding calls. The Global Challenges Research Fund work from early 2017 was used to help inform a 2018 GCRF funding call. Some of our work was displayed at the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Renewable and Sustainable Energy (PRASEG) which we attended with industry and trade body representatives in order to inform government on energy innovation. These and other meetings are detailed in the BBSRC Extranet for this period.

Title Tracking Functional Microbiomes of The UKs Anaerobic Digestion Reactors (anaerodynamics.com)
Description The AD Network has sponsored the website development for the home of the UK Anaerobic Digestion Microbiome Monitoring Project, run by Co-I, Prof Orkun Soyer. The project aims to collect weekly microbiome data for over a year from industrial-scale anaerobic digestion plants across the UK, therefore producing an unprecedented temporal genomic dataset from these reactors, along with detailed metadata on their operational conditions and output. The AD Network signposted many of these industrial plants to this collaborative and unique project. The data collected will be made freely available and will be used to aid our understanding of the science of anaerobic digestion, and of how the highly complex microbial communities inhabiting anaerobic digestion plants affect and are affected by operational conditions. This understanding may help us to better control the process and increase its efficiency. Participants There are currently 10 anaerobic digestion plants across the UK involved in the project. Anaerobic digestion is used for a variety of purposes and in different industries, and we have a cross-section of digesters, from industrial operations digesting large amounts of farm waste or dedicated biofuels to smaller digesters used on farms to degrade waste and produce energy and fertiliser

PI Contribution Southampton will host and provide speakers and guidance to the 2015 ADBA R and D conference to be held 14-15 April 2015. This was carried on throughout 2016 and 2017 and is reported on in the 'events/outreach' section.
Collaborator Contribution ADBA anticipates over 70 members will attend this research dissemination event and will co-ordinate, advertise and run the conference. This has grown to about 90 in recent years. A further result of this partnership is that the AD Network has provided contacts for, and technical expertise on various aspects of R&D to ADBA members and in response to their enquiries.
Impact ADBA is the largest trade body in UK AD and very active in policy, lobbying, trade and regulatory issues. However, in the past it has struggled to put together a high quality program of new research dissemination. It is anticipated that this initial partnership will showcase the newest and most relevant R&D findings from academia to a wide industry audience. The themes in 2015 will be the biorefinery concept and digestate.
