"Brexit Britain": How do British political documents and pro-Brexit newspapers construct British, EU and extra-European identities in Brexit-related

Lead Research Organisation: University of Nottingham
Department Name: School of English

Abstract

My thesis will critically examine, through a corpus-assisted critical discourse analysis (CDA), how British political documents and pro-Brexit newspapers use language to represent British, EU and extra-European identities in Brexit-related immigration discourse. I will analyse how these identities are positioned in relation to one another and examine the socio-political ideologies, related to Brexit and UK immigration policy, that underpin them. I will interview non-native British citizens to ascertain their views on the identities assigned to them in institutional discourses and the effects of Brexit-related discourse on their lives.
