Mediated forest: Landscape and identity in post-Soviet Estonia

Lead Research Organisation: University of Oxford
Department Name: Geography - SoGE

Abstract

My specific areas of interest are the reconciliation of environmental sustainability and development, and ontological conflicts in forest conservation. In the light of recent deforestation facilitating legislations passed in my native Estonia and across Europe (e.g. the classification of timber as a renewable energy resource by the EU), I wish to identify the possible ontological roots of the communication deficiencies between various stakeholders of these decisions. NSEG-offered units-such as Environmental Participation and Governance, and Land Use and Development-will enable me to build on the skills gained from my undergraduate programme and my independent research. Additionally, my language skills will allow me to make the most of Estonian and Russian sources in Estonia, as well as any research published in Spanish (such as some developments in Indigenous Studies that carry wider relevance for Political Ontology). I am confident that by the end of the taught part of the Masters programme I will be equipped to apply my skillset in the European, and more specifically Baltic, geopolitical context, to contribute towards a more inclusive policy-making and comprehensive environmental education.
