Situation awareness in remote vehicle operators

Lead Research Organisation: Royal Holloway University of London
Department Name: Psychology

Abstract

The arrival of highly automated vehicles on our roads creates a corresponding need for remote human operation of these vehicles under certain circumstances, for example, current field trials in autonomous road vehicles require continuous safety monitoring by human operators either from within or outside the vehicles who can intervene if potentially dangerous situation arise. In the future as driverless vehicles become more widespread, remote human operators might be called upon to take control when a problem arises.
