Abstract

This research seeks to critically explore the intersection between the gendered impacts of mining, focusing on three key aspects - health, work and sexual violence - and women's community organising for gender equality, through analysing the experiences and perspectives of women involved in the organisation "La Red de Mujeres del Loa" [the Loa women's network], who have organised for the past 12 years in defense of natural resources and gender equality in the context of living with large scale resource extraction. This organisation is a diverse space encompassing woman from different ethnic and socioeconomic positions, who live across the rural sector of Alto Loa and urban sector of Calama in the Atacama Desert in north of Chile1.
