Lead Research Organisation: University of Surrey
Department Name: Chemistry

Abstract

Novel developments in Ambient Ionisation Mass Spectrometry: This project aims to establish standards for the assessment of different techniques and understand the strengths and weaknesses of each, to form an analytical toolkit.
This may require working in laboratories across the UK to gain experience in how the various techniques work to ensure they are tested using an unbiased approach. In addition to understanding and characterising existing techniques the potential to combine techniques to generate new or more effective modes of ionisation will be explored. Understanding how molecules can be mobilised from surfaces and then ionised will enable targeted pairing of techniques to enhance
limits of detection, reject background and suppression effects and increase the range of materials which can be analysed in the fields of pharmaceutics, forensics and security, food authenticity and for clinical procedures.
