advanced robotics for additive manufacturing of construction materials

Abstract

The concept of 3D printing has been around for almost 30 years; however its exploitation for the construction industry has only picked up interest in last decade. Additive manufacturing is a process to fabricate objects in 3D (layer by layer) from a digital model. The construction sector can benefit hugely from the impacts of additive manufacturing as it brings new horizons in this sector, from new printable materials feedstocks to novel printer configurations (i.e. robotics) and architectural designs (i.e. complex geometries). Construction sector is decades behind other sector in terms of adopting technological innovations, therefore the opportunity to prove the concept of additive manufacturing for large-scale construction presents significant advancement. The proposed idea for the research is of multidisciplinary nature combining different areas of engineering as a key for its successful up-scaling and industrial implementation in the sector. I would utilise my knowledge from the electronic discipline and robotics experience with the construction material science to achieve the full objectives of my research.
