Process Modelling and Optimisation of Biomolecular Separations for Advanced Pharmaceutical Manufacturing

Lead Research Organisation: University of Edinburgh
Department Name: Sch of Engineering

Abstract

Biomanufacturing plays a key role in the synthesis of major products in various
industries e.g. pharmaceuticals, biofuels, agrochemicals etc. The scale up and
downstream processing of these production lines is vital to the commercial
manufacture of such products. Searching for holistic solutions to the problems
encountered in the scale up and downstream processing of these products requires
the consideration of numerous factors e.g. cost, sustainability, environmental
consequence, all of which require research and development of new technologies and
devices. As opposed to focussing on the raw biological phenomena, the research
proposed will focus upon transforming the early stages of synthetic biology into fully
developed industrial processes which manufacture meaningful products in a
competitive and sustainable manner.
