Fatigue Crack Propagation

Lead Research Organisation: Imperial College London
Department Name: Mechanical Engineering

Abstract

Cracks in engines have been found to grow under multiaxial and changing stress fields. The fundamental understanding required to predict the trajectory under these conditions does not appear to exist. The outcome of the project will be an experimental database of crack growth rates and directions, together with a validated criterion for the prediction of growth rates.
