The long-term labour market impacts of local economic shocks

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Economics

Abstract

I have carried out some initial research looking into the long-term impacts of deindustrialisation on local labour markets in
aggregate, and broadly found some persistent impacts even 30 years after the initial shock. This has relevance to current
policy debates around levelling-up and improving economic performance in areas impacted by locally concentrated
labour market shocks. However, using individual level panel data this can be greatly improved upon, and the use of
instruments for the labour market shocks could also be improved to ensure that labour market shocks are not
endogenous. I am interested therefore in further exploring this topic and research area
