Phenotype, scientific racism and colonialism: the reintroduction of colonial categories of race in committee proceedings in Brazil

My research seeks to chronologise the development of affirmative action in Brazil. In this, I endeavour to understand the inception of rights mobilisations for affirmative measures. Secondly, I seek to explore how the measures provided in affirmative action have sought to overcome the socio-economic and political exclusions of Afro-Brazilian groups in Brazil. I aim to explore how affirmative action is considered a form of reparations for the legacy of the slave trade and racial inequality for Afro-Brazilians. A key aspect that my research seeks to engage with is the complementary regulatory process as it focuses on the creation of heteroidentificação hetero-identification committees tasked to deal with alleged fraudulent self-identified applicants under race based affirmative action.
