Abstract
The aim of the research is to derive and analyse mathematical models of cellular dynamics, focusing on the ordinary and partial differential equation models but also exploring stochastic effects. The work will build from simple systems through steadily increasing complexity, initially concentrating on widely realised regulatory motifs. Understanding of the described systems will be sought both analytically, where possible, and numerically. The goal is to understand biological processes using a concrete mathematical framework, one which can be easily altered or added to in order to represent different cell actions, changes to the system or new data. The project aims to provide a theoretical understanding of complex biological phenomena using relatively simple mathematical building blocks that demonstrate the power and versatility of mathematical modelling.
