The genetics architectures of blood cell traits across diverse African populations

Lead Research Organisation: London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine
Department Name: Department of Pathogen Molecular Biology

Abstract

Blood cell traits (BCT) such as red and white blood cells, are partially determined by
genetic factors and have been shaped by evolutionary forces, leading to population
differences that are not well understood. Most previous genome-wide association
studies of BCT used samples with European ancestries. Using ~50K samples from
Africa and the UK/US, the student will characterise the genetic architectures of BCT.
Bringing together the fields of genetics, bioinformatics, popgen, and haematology, this
work could advance our understanding of the basic principles of complex trait genetics
and evolution, and yield new biological insights pertinent to African and global
populations.
