Sustainable Motor Drives

High Speed Motors Drives for domestic products utilise critical materials (such as rare earth metals) to achieve high efficiencies and small lightweight forms. However, the typical life of the products they are used in are much shorter than their working life leading to useful, working systems or valuable materials being disposed of with plenty of life remaining. This PhD will explore novel designs for motors that reduce this wasted potential without sacrificing performance or size, the key focus will be on design for recovery, repair or re-use and reduction use of critical materials.
