EU FP7-Analysis of the TRPV2 calcium channel in inflammation

Lead Research Organisation: Babraham Institute
Department Name: UNLISTED

Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Technical Summary

Many diseases are thought to arise from defective 'signal transduction', the internal chemical language that cells use to monitor their surroundings and talk to other cells. Calcium ions are an important and widespread component of this chemical language used by animal and human cells. The TRP family of ion channels mediate calcium influx in eukaryotic cells. The aim of this work is to define the role of TRPV2, a member of the TRP family, in different types of white blood cell.

Description This revealed that a channel on the surface of macrophages has an important role in macrophage biology.
Exploitation Route The project was successful but as a result of a publication by another group at the point we were about to submit our work we lost our lead in this area, however, the principle ideas have been developed as a result of the paper published by another group and hence have been taken forward.
