Creation of an intelligent machining system to adapt to structural variability in safety critical titanium alloy components

Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Description The finding from this project have contributed to wider thinking on the elasticity of advanced engineering metals which in turn has spurred on more research into the measurement of elastic constants. This has kick off another EPSRC project on the elastic constant measurement supported by 5 international companies and 7 Universities. It has also informed developments into so-called gradient materials where the microstructural properties are deliberately engineered as a function of position. These are of fundamental and industry interest for gaining materials where the properties can be designed and manufacturer in much the same way as form can at present. This further contributed to the first international workshop on quality assurance in gradient materials (Austin, TX August 22).
