Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research - University of Kent

Lead Research Organisation: University of Kent
Department Name: Sch of Computing

Abstract

Cyber Security has been established as a university level priority area at the University of Kent. Our Cyber Security research has had a strong focus on interdisciplinarity since 2012, when the university wide Kent Interdisciplinary Research Centre in Cyber Security (KirCCS) was established. We believe that Cyber Security challenges cannot be solved using only technological solutions, and that we need the involvement of researchers from other disciplines. A collaborative approach allows us to benefit from, and be inspired by, theories and solutions from disciplines such as psychology, physics, biology, and social sciences. Interdisciplinary collaboration has led Kent researchers to a number of major successes in external funding.

Cyber Security capabilities at the University of Kent are on four main research themes: Authentication and Authorisation; Communication and Network Security; Security Testing and Verification; and Socio-technical Security. We also have capabilities on four other cross-cutting topics: applications of AI related technologies in Cyber Security; digital forensics and cybercrime; information hiding; and quantum cyber security. Our work on AI spans all four research themes, and covers diverse techniques including machine learning, data mining, information visualisation, discrete optimisation, and soft computing.

In addition to conducting cutting-edge research, we aim to make KirCCS an innovation and impact creation hub in Cyber Security through activities on education (e.g., supporting the NCSC-certified MSc in Cyber Security programme at Kent), public engagement (e.g., conducting Cyber Security surveys and working with public media to inform and raise awareness of the general public about Cyber Security), serving government (e.g., helping law enforcement agencies to fight against threats such as cybercrime), helping industry (e.g., providing consultancies to and co-exploiting research results with industrial partners), and technology transfer (e.g., through patenting and university spin-offs). Cyber Security researchers at Kent have an excellent track record in all these areas.

The Kent ACE-CSR will work with other ACEs-CSR to enhance the international profile of UK Cyber Security research.

Planned Impact

In addition to its academic impact, interdisciplinary research on Cyber Security at the proposed Kent ACE-CSR will benefit the society as a whole in at least three different ways: 1) the technical research we do will help build better technologies for protecting people and businesses in the cyber(-physical) world; 2) our work in the Socio-Technical Security theme and research done by our Associate Members from other disciplines will generate impact beyond technologies, e.g., approaches to better understanding of human behaviour, better information security management procedures and policies, better approaches to educating people and engaging end users, better cybercrime investigation and prevention methods, better privacy and data protection mechanisms improving people's lives in the cyber(-physical) world; 3) the impact creation and public engagement activities planned will help transfer our research to the real world.

Description This is not a research project, but a research centre project and the funding covers managerial matters only. The main finding for this project is that we found the EPSRC funding and the NCSC recognition helped the University of Kent to grow its cyber security research, education and impact-generation capabilities significantly. A major outcome of the project is the official establishment of the Institute of Cyber Security for Society (iCSS) in 2021, which has now become a fully functional institute with its own dedicated physical space, admin staff and an operational budget. Another major outcome is the expansion of the former research centre's remit from research into a wide range of activities including research, education, supporting the University of Kent on improving its cyber security, and wider impact generation including public engagement, school outreach, innovation and working with public bodies. More major impacts have been enabled in 2023-24: the University of Kent was recognised as an ACE-CSE in 2023 and re-recognised as an ACE-CSR in 2024; the University of Kent became a member of CyberFirst in 2023; a number of key bodies were established to have wider societal impact - KMCC (Kent & Medway Cyber Cluster), KMCSN (Kent & Medway CyberSchools Network) and KMCS3 (Kent & Medway Cyber Security Student Society).
Exploitation Route The Institute of Cyber Security for Society (iCSS) has become a useful instrument to benefit staff and students at the University of Kent, and also external people and organisations, in all areas related to cyber security: research, education, innovation, public engagement, outreach, and wider impacts.

Description 2023-24 CyberAnything Competition
Form Of Engagement Activity Participation in an activity, workshop or similar
Part Of Official Scheme? No
Geographic Reach National
Primary Audience Public/other audiences
Results and Impact Together with KMCC (Kent & Medway Cyber Cluster Ltd) and KMCS3 (Kent & Medway Cyber Security Student Society), iCSS is co-organising a CyberAnything Competition. The competition started in late September 2023, and KMCC joined the initiative as a co-organiser and a co-sponsor in late December, 2023.

We increasingly rely upon digital, networked and smart technologies such as mobile devices and the internet to live our lives. Or we can say that we are living in the Internet of Everything (IoE), a cyber-physical world where so many hardware devices, software systems, physical things, systems and people are now interconnected. However, the cyber elements of our lives and how security, privacy and safety of such elements affect our lives are not always visible or overlooked, and sometimes intentionally concealed. They are often so entrenched in our way of being that we overlook our reliance upon them until they stop functioning, e.g., when a power cut, server downtime or an empty battery hits us.

This competition welcomes anything that is cyber-related in our daily lives. You can use your camera or other image-capturing device to capture a moment as a photo or a short video, or create a drawing, or prepare an infographic such as a flyer or a PowerPoint slide, or write an essay or even a poem, or make a 3-D printed object or a hand-crafted artefact, etc., which can tell a story about living, learning and connecting in the cyber or cyber-physical world in the past, at present, and/or in the future. You are also welcome to try generative AI for creating your submission, but in this case please describe which generative AI tool(s) were used and how you used it/them, e.g., prompt(s) you used to create the submission.

Cash prizes

Submitted artefacts will be judged anonymously by a judging panel for the following prizes in the following four categories: 1) current staff of the University of Kent, 2) current students of the University of Kent, 3) alumni of the University of Kent, and 4) other UK residents who have never been affiliated with the University of Kent. The cash prizes will be jointly sponsored by iCSS and KMCC. More cash prizes are available for sub-competitions and more may be added for the main competition.
- 4 Best Overall Prizes (one per category, £80 Amazon e-voucher per prize),
- 4 Most Creative Prizes (one per category, £80 Amazon e-voucher per prize), and
- 8 Runner-Up Prizes (two per category; £20 Amazon e-voucher per prize).

Results and Impact An event organised by the Institute of Cyber Security for Society (iCSS) saw members of the community come together on Kent's Canterbury campus to celebrate new partnerships, training schemes and the award-winning outputs from the 2023-24 CyberAnything Competition.

The event also celebrated Kent's newly established academic partnership with ISC2, the world's leading not-for-profit member association for cyber security professionals, which will see them join forces with the KMCC to close the cyber security skills gap currently faced by businesses globally. They are encouraging people in Kent and Medway to complete ISC2's beginner-facing cyber security certification CC as part of ISC2's campaign to get 1 million people CC-certified with free training materials and waived exam fees. The collaboration will also see them deliver a pilot training course for ISC2's more advanced cyber security certification CISSP later this summer.

This further informed our work as it highlighted the need for more research into guidelines for developers of these devices. Furthermore, our work notified attendees of the various ways in which these devices may open them to risk (as they are used).
