Photoelectron spectroscopy in a liquid microjet: unravelling the excited state dynamics of photoactive proteins

Lead Research Organisation: UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON
Department Name: Chemistry

Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Description We have developed a new instrument for uv photoelectron spectroscopy and time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy in liquid microjets. We have published our first paper using this instrument and have data for other chromophores that is currently being analysed.
Exploitation Route Our instrument is versatile so can be used for probing the photochemistry of a wide range of materials.
Sectors Chemicals

Title Retrieval of true ultraviolet photoelectron spectra of aqueous solutions
Description Combination of Monte Carlo simulations and spectral retrieval to convert UV photoelectron spectra of liquids to true spectra that are no longer distorted by the effect of inelastic scattering.
Type Of Material Data analysis technique
Year Produced 2022
Provided To Others? Yes
Impact It has led us to collaborate with Dr Iain Wilkinson in Berlin, Professor Ruth Signorell in Zurich, and to us further developing this software.

Description Collaboration with Berlin
Organisation Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres
Department Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin for Materials and Energy
Country Germany
Sector Academic/University
PI Contribution As a result of our work trying to understand the effect of inelastic scattering of low energy electrons in ultraviolet liquid-jet photoelectron spectroscopy, that arose from this grant, we have been awarded funding from the Royal Society for an exchange of PhD students between our group and the group of Iain Wilkinson in Berlin who works, primarily, on X-ray and extreme ultraviolet liquid-jet photoelectron spectroscopy.
Collaborator Contribution We co-wrote the grant application.
Impact None yet.
