Modelling and testing photonic devices for quantum simulation

Abstract

Scaling photonic quantum simulators to provide a quantum advantage will require development of photonic technologies. This studentship will research novel methods to process and error correct photonic quantum information. Key applications will be the quantum simulation of molecular quantum dynamics and particle physics.

The first year of the PhD is focused on modelling primitive photonic components and devices. This includes the generation and manipulation of quantum states of light and translating between path encoded and time encoded photonic quantum information. Modelled components will be fabricated in various materials including silicon and silicon nitride and visible and IR wavelengths.

The second year will be concerned with testing and refining fabricated devices through several iterations. The latter part of the PhD will aim to scale up the developed components to process photonic quantum information on a large scale.

Implementing machine learning protocols will be a key part of mitigating quantum errors and pursuing a quantum advantage for practical quantum simulators.
